Why We Need Coldplay
At the moment I’m totally into Chris Martin, songwriter, singer and frontman of much loved mega British band Coldplay. Okay, judge me as being late to the party since they got off the ground in 1997, but actually I think I’ve arrived at exactly the right time.
Let’s face it, things are in a very big schemozzle right now, and we have to decide for ourselves how we’re going to get through it. In fact there are lots of different ways because we have many resources at our disposal and aren’t nearly as helpless as we may sometimes feel.
One of these ways is to choose what or who we choose to put our focus on.
Do we focus on someone who is authentic, transparent, exudes love, kindness, care, joy, and hope, while still acknowledging all the darkness and shadows that exist.
Someone who is sweet and humble, while bringing colour, energy and connection to millions of people with his band mates, and who is described as an angel on earth.
Or do we focus on people who have none of those characteristics? People who trigger anxiety, fear, hate, outrage and more.
These latter people are very good at grabbing our attention – yet happily we have the power of choice. So to whom or what do we choose to pay attention? Who do we want to emulate? Whose energy do we want to bathe in? (It’s all energy after all).
I heard Chris talk about the Japanese art of kintsugi. This involves repairing broken pottery with gold. It uses a lacquer that has been mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum and instead of the pieces being discarded, a new piece that is more beautiful than before is created.
It’s all too easy to see the world as well as ourselves as broken, so perhaps our task is to bring kindness, love, care, compassion, humility and joy to the brokenness of both ourselves and the world, accepting our imperfections and healing in a way that creates more beauty than before.
Change, as we all know, can be difficult and take work, but we always have tapping there as a support at the end of our finger tips. All we have to do is remember to use it!
