When I was a teenager and the Vietnam war was raging, I remember The Guardian newspaper being delivered each morning. There was perhaps one black and white picture and an article from the war front.  We had no TV, so a wireless with only a few channels available and a telephone situated in a very cold hallway were our connection to the outside world.

Compare that to the bombardment we receive today.
We are all exposed to increasing levels of trauma from around the world and our own surroundings, through an endless number of channels, designed to be addictive.  And we can also try to distract from feelings of overwhelm, depletion, depression, anxiety, burnout, despair, heartbreak, by immersing ourselves in an endless array of entertainment options. We disconnect from ourselves and others.

It’s important to remember we don’t just have a physical presence, we are energetic beings.
As such we act as a transmitter, receiving and transmitting different frequencies.  An intense news story, a climate event, volatile experiences, all carry heavy, dense frequencies and we respond with heavy, dense emotional frequencies. However, given that where our focus goes, energy follows, we can learn to focus on and anchor into higher frequencies that bring joy, contentment, motivation, calm, or hope.

Here are some suggestions for higher frequencies to focus on and anchor into:

Higher Frequency 1: Beauty
We’re so often occupied in our minds we miss the beauty that is all around us if we stop to notice and absorb it.  A flower, sunbeams shining through a cloud, a striking image, music, birdsong, rain on the roof, the design detail on a tile, vase or dish, the texture of a sandstone wall, the symmetry of a building.  Where can you find beauty with which to replenish yourself?

Higher Frequency 2: Gratitude
Gratitude is one of the highest vibrational frequencies you can experience.  Around 540 MHz to be slightly more precise! Obviously it’s good to spend as much time as possible there, but when you’re in the pit of things it can be hard to find. Being grateful for something simple like the cup of tea you are having can be a good start.

You can express gratitude for things, to other people and of course to yourself.  “Thank you, thank you, thank you” is a wonderful mantra. Even a thank you for the challenges that come our way that cause us to step up into our best selves.

Higher Frequency 3: Creativity
We are creative beings and need to express ourselves.  Sitting slumped, half comatose in front of Netflix is okay for a while, but it’s not very high frequency!  It doesn’t matter how – writing, singing, dancing, music, stories, poetry, prayers, composing, craft making, painting, a DIY project, gardening. I love going out in the morning to pick some fresh greens that I’ve grown for a juice.

Some great creations have come out of the pandemic – I have to confess to loving a jaunty video clip from a bunch of Australian musicians doing what they do best, telling us all to “Stay the F*** at Home”.  (Content alert – bad language. You may prefer something more classical!)

Higher Frequency 4:  Laughter
Always the best medicine – and high frequency to boot. Sometimes at my business networking meeting, instead of talking about my business I tell a joke or funny story.  I even found a really good Covid joke for the last meeting!  Go after whatever makes you laugh. If you can’t find it in yourself or with others, go online and watch something funny instead of the news. OK, my upbringing in England is showing up – I can always find a British comedian to make me laugh.

Higher Frequency 5:  Wisdom
Time to sit still and access our own inner wisdom.  We can listen to all that cacophony of noise and be swayed this way or that, but ultimately we need to filter it out and be guided  by our heart.  That takes deliberate attention and focus but is the most loving thing we can do for ourselves. Just breathe.

Higher Frequency 6: Wonder
Let’s add awe and curiosity to wonder.  I watch my 2 year old granddaughter, endlessly curious, experimenting, filled with the wonder of exploring the world around her.  Look up into the night sky and be awed by the universe in which we live, bathe in the white light of the moon with your feet on the earth and remember you are not separate, you are a part of the whole.
